Upskilling and training with Thorntons Recycling! 05/10/2021

In July we sent 8 members of staff on an Emergency Fire and Safety Training Level 3 course.

An emergency response team is crucial in our facilities. We require quick and efficient responses to avoid injuries, serious damage and destruction within our sites.

Upon discovering a fire onsite our trained ERT will conduct the below;

• Activate the Fire alarm.

• Attack the fire with the correct fire Extinguisher (If safe to do so)

• ERT members may as an alternative to extinguishers use a Control Branch and a hose at a controlled pressure.

• Evacuate immediately under any of the following circumstances.

a) One extinguisher is not enough to put out the fire.

b) Smoke is affecting your breathing.

c) You cannot see the way out.

d) Gas cylinders or chemicals are involved.

e) Your efforts are not reducing the size of the fire.

• Once the ERT Support members evacuate the danger area they may only re-enter under the direction and supervision of the ERT Team Leader

• ERT members may deploy heavy hose and branches at higher pressures only under the direction and supervision of the ERT Team Leader

• ERT members may operate the Ground Monitors only under the direction and supervision of the ERT Team Leader.

• Due to smoke inhalation hazards ERT members must remain min 30m away from the building on fire unless the ERT Team Leader deems it safe for them to operate closer.

• Notwithstanding the limitations of ERT they will always be under the control of the ERT Team Leader.

We are delighted to have managers and staff trained in this area and we a grateful for the time and energy they put in to complete this course!
