Dept of Environment increases Landfill Levy to €30 from 1/2/2010 (February 2nd 2010)
As of 1 February 2010, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government increased the landfill levy, using the power available to him under the Waste Management Acts. The Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Order 2010 (SI 13 of 2010) amends Section 73(3) of the Waste Management Acts 1996 to 2008 to allow for the landfill levy to be increased by €5 to €30 per tonne for each tonne of waste disposed of at authorised and unauthorised landfill facilities. The Minister has also made the Waste Management (Landfill Levy)(Amendment) Regulations 2010 (SI No. 31 of 2010) which amends the 2008 Regulations to implement the increased levy of €30 per tonne for waste disposed of at authorised and unauthorised landfill facilities. As of 1 February 2010, the landfill levy rate is €30 per tonne for each tonne of waste disposed of at authorised landfill facilities and at unauthorised landfill facilities. These increases are a transitional measure as the Minister proposes to bring forward primary legislation to amend the Waste Management Acts. The proposed legislation will allow the Minister to apply significantly higher levy rates with a view to deploying this economic instrument to drive the diversion of waste from landfill. This will also have regard to the targets that have to be met under Council Directive 1999/31/EC of 26 April 1999 on the landfill of waste.

Please contact Thorntons Recycling to help you avoid sending material to landfill and reduce your waste costs.
